April Member of the Month

April showers bring our April MOM's garden veggies! This month our newest KSCFam Member of the Month is Hannah McCurry. Hannah has become a pandemic CF newborn and has taken the reigns by the horns and shown consistency and big improvements. You'll generally see Han at the 6:25 pm classes doing her best to stay out of everyone else's way while she crushes her WOD. When you see her in the box, roll out the red carpet and stay out of her way while you give her a mid-WOD high-five.

Learn a little bit more about Hannah below.

My athletic background is defined by a severe lack of real athletics. I ran cross country in high school (slowest on the team by at least 3 minutes per mile) and dabbled in ultimate frisbee in college (ask me about my forehand throw!), but these endeavors were only to get out of school gym and to force myself to get out of the lab, respectively.

Then March 2020 happened, I was sent home from college to live with my family and attempt to write 2 (two!!) senior theses from my childhood bedroom while battling the type of boredom (*cough*depression*cough*) I’m sure everyone is familiar with after 2 (two!!) long years of living in a pandemic. Queue my best friend from childhood bullying me into joining her virtual CrossFit class that she coaches, and me finding a new passion. I had something to do with my brother’s never before used 10 lb dumbbells and something to look forward to at the end of each day again, how novel!

After a workout you can find me eating a truly ungodly amount of tofu while watching some old and obscure Disney movie or marathoning Star Wars before retiring to my couch and crocheting granny squares until my bedtime. On the topic of hobbies, another one of mine is gardening! I volunteer at an urban farm (ReVision Urban Farm) in Dorchester that is my heaven on earth. If you want to try some of our veggies, come by the Roslindale Farmers Market on Saturdays starting in June and I’ll talk at you about plants as long as you let me, and probably even longer.

I love CrossFit! I’m preaching to the choir, I know, but it’s so fun!! I have muscles for the first time ever, and the capability and confidence that comes with that is something I’ve never really had in my life. I love how CrossFit at KSCF is about building strength, but also about building a community, and I’m so grateful that I’ve been able to build friendships at KSCF just as much as I’ve built muscle. I love it here! EXCEPT when I’m forced to do burpees. Then I absolutely 100% want to quit and never come back. The only time I can accept burpees is when they are involved in AMRAPs or EMOMs, which are my absolute favorite WODs, so that I can take my time catching my breath on the ground (and ultimately do less of them). I’ll try to sound like a good CrossFit student in my next sentence, here goes. I’m really determined to get my first pull-up sometime soon- I’m really close everyone, I can feel it. Catch me at open gym doing negatives and practicing with bands and such. Wish me luck!
