🎉 Member of the Month: Steven Johnson 🎉

Apparently one Member of the Month recognition was not enough for Steven Johnson, so our coaches decided it was time to recognize him again!

Steven’s consistency and the energy he brings to class have made him a steady part of the KSCF community. He connects with coaches and members, keeps the banter going, and helps create the group energy that makes a good class even better.

Our coaches have also noticed the extra work Steven has been putting into his own training. Whether it is spending more time on mobility, improving a skill, or simply working on something that does not come naturally, he continues to find ways to challenge himself and improve.

Steven is also all about the CrossFit community as a whole. Even when traveling, he regularly finds a local box, jumps into a class, and keeps his fitness moving. Clearly, vacation is not a good enough excuse to stop working out.

Steven brings consistency, effort, and plenty of personality to KSCF, and we are grateful to have him as part of our community.

Congratulations on becoming a two time Member of the Month, Steven. Keep bringing the vibes! đź’Ş

For those of you who don't know me, I'm a born and bred Mainer who moved to Boston in the early 2000s to see what life had to offer in the big city. I'm not exactly the "i've been playing sports my entire life" type. I spent the first 40 years of my life as an asthmatic nerd who struggled picking up two D&D Books at the same time. I couldn't walk up a flight of stairs without signing a waiver. After losing 40 pounds because I stopped eating entire packages of oreos everyday (that's not a joke), an unexpected breakup and taking some responsibility for my life...  I did a little soul searching, and decided to join Kendall Square CrossFit. It looked fun and challenging. That's what I needed in my life.

In my early days, showing up to CrossFit was hard. I was embarrassed about my terrible fitness, self-conscious about my lack of knowledge and in constant physical pain. Now it's easy to show up. I keep coming back to KSCF because of the countless health benefits (I rarely use my inhaler anymore, my back is stronger, etc.), the knowledgeable coaches who aren't afraid to joke around and give a guy like me a hard time (which is exactly what I want in a gym), and the opportunity to be around like minded people who want to get a little stronger everyday. I'm eager to show up, ready to challenge myself and still in constant pain... but for much better reasons. I continue to challenge myself because, in my 40s, I still don't know my full potential as an athlete. There will come a day when my fitness journey will slow down... but that day isn't today. I want to see what I can accomplish with the time that I have, despite being a late starter.

What's helped me improve over the last few months is taking the time to practice outside class hours. Showing up early (or staying late) and running skills give me time to slow down and work through a technique. It has improved my power snatch, pull-ups and handstands. Plus... I get to listen to my own music (which has way too much screaming for most people). Scaling appropriately so you can do a move correctly also makes a big difference (ask me about the first time I used a 30 pound wall ball).

When I'm not hyperventilating on the floor of the gym, I can be found running Ghosts & Gravestones: Boston (a nighttime tour of Boston's Haunted History), hiking and swimming in New Hampshire and Vermont, listening to heavy metal (I'm seeing Sabaton in December), watching horror movies, talking about horror movies, podcasting about horror movies, self deprecating humor (In 7th grade, I told my entire science class that I was a big fan of self-defecating humor) and avoiding cooking at all costs.
