July Member of the Month!!

This month we recognize Steven Johnson who was chosen as our July MOM. Steven has been with KSCF for a while now and has humbly become a part of our KSCFam and been part of our community events.

Say hi to Steven when you see him at our classes as he comes to all hours of classes throughout the day. Check out more about Steven below.

July MOM is Steven Johnson

I don't want to boast, but my extensive background as a highly trained, deeply skilled and fiercely disciplined athlete dates all the way back to 2019 when I walked through the doors of KSCF and almost puked during my onboarding. It was pretty impressive. I think I was the first person to get dizzy while stretching. What can I say? I’m pretty tough. All joking aside, I had almost no experience as an athlete before joining KSCF. I was a moderately experienced camper, skier, and hiker with a few introductory boxing/rock climbing classes under my belt. Nothing special. The fact that I listed “camper” as part of my “athletic background” should tell you all you need to know. My most strenuous activity was playing Dungeons & Dragons. Years ago, I knew a guy who lost twenty pounds while taking classes at CrossFit in Kenmore Square. I was interested in the functionality of the movements and the idea that I could both scale workouts while keeping the intensity. It seemed cool, but the guy never shut up about it and I swore I would never go. Years later, I had major life changes that pushed me to live a more challenged, healthy life. I remembered my interest in CrossFit and looked for the closest gym that looked both challenging and friendly to beginners. After arriving at KSCF and meeting the fantastic coaches, I was hooked. Now I don’t shut up about it… I actually like most CF movements. In particular, I like anything that’s a chipper, involves box jumps, deadlifts, renegade rows, kettlebell swings, cleans, or has a longer time duration. I like when I have to plan and strategize my way through a WOD that seems insurmountable at my level. I feel like I’m supposed to say thrusters, but I actually don't mind them. I hate Turkish get-ups (I fall all over myself) and I have no love for the SkiERG (which is funny because I love skiing). Also… I actually don’t like Wall-Balls. I don’t have a Post-WOD recovery consumption plan beyond not throwing up my lunch, but I should probably come up with one. During the WOD, I’m known for cracking an ice-cold can of C4 to keep myself nice and twitchy during peak performance. Outside of CrossFit, I’m a huge horror/true-crime nerd (Books, Movies, Podcasts, and Haunted Houses to name… anything macabre), extremely amateur photographer and writer, film buff, news/politics junkie and I love the outdoors unconditionally in both its best and worst moments. I’m also a bit of a self-improvement addict and I love to find new ways to challenge myself. My original goal for CrossFit was to show up and not die. I couldn’t imagine anything more than that. In my short time at KSCF, I’ve achieved more than I could’ve imagined and have surpassed the low bar I set for myself. I can almost do a handstand, lift a moderate amount of weight, and did a scaled version of the MURPH. I feel good about my accomplishments, but I have no idea what I’m capable of beyond that. In short, my goals are to continue perfecting my snatch, handstand, pull-ups, eventually, do an unscaled MURPH, and perform a WOD at RX. As a nerd who never thought he would be an athlete, a long-term goal is to compete in something offered by CrossFit or something CrossFit friendly (like a Savage Race). I wouldn’t care if I got last place, it would just be amazing to try and make a real, serious effort.
