September Member of the Month
Fall is approaching fast with Pumpkin and Oktoberfest signs around. So is the time to meet Willem, our Member of the Month at Kendall Square CrossFit!
Since joining us in April, Willem has made tremendous strides, including achieving his first muscle-up just a couple of months ago. Each class, he pushes himself to reach our Rx weights, showing determination and growth. Beyond his physical gains, Willem is a consistent presence, embodying the community spirit with respect and social engagement. He makes an effort to connect with everyone in class and participates actively in our community events. Sadly, Willem will be moving back to Europe in October, so take the opportunity to chat with him and share in this well-deserved recognition before he leaves. We’re proud to have had him as part of our Kendall Square family!

I have played field hockey (yes, that's also a sport played by men) since I was a kid. It wasn't really a choice; my whole family played it, so I did too. I really enjoy team sports—working together towards a goal, and winning together is the best feeling. Fitness, on the other hand, has never been my thing. I tried going to the gym during the off-season, but I definitely didn’t get past the treadmill. I first came into contact with "CrossFit-esque" workouts by dropping in on the group fitness classes my parents attended. Although not really CrossFit, I saw how my parents would show up for training because of the sense of community among the people there.
In Switzerland, I discovered that the university sports association offered what I call "baby-CrossFit"—no barbells, just gymnastics and kettlebells. I started with that once a week, but it quickly tripled as I definitely got addicted to the post-WOD high.
When I made plans to go to MIT, I looked up CrossFit boxes before even thinking about housing. My main goal coming here was to learn muscle-ups—not exactly something school-related! Anyway, I really love improving myself in this sport, and I’m thrilled that there’s always something new to learn or improve. KSCF definitely welcomed me with open arms, and it’s become a highlight of my day every day.
I don’t have a specific favorite WOD, but it won’t surprise anyone that I love running WODs. I also really enjoy gymnastics movements, from rope jumping to muscle-ups (now that I can finally do some). Lastly, and this might be an unpopular opinion, but I also enjoy burpees—they get your heart rate up every time, no matter how many you do. I think I won’t talk about my least favorite movement, though, as I’ve noticed a pattern that it tends to show up spontaneously in the WODs, like last month. So maybe I’ll just say running 😉.
Outside of CrossFit, you might find me obsessively watching an oven. Baking is definitely a big passion of mine—from macarons to American birthday sprinkle cakes, I love to bake it all. I also enjoy playing board games. I tend to always lose, but for me, it's about the fun you have while playing. My big goal at the beginning of my time here was to do a bar muscle-up. After my first on-ramp, Mario gave me the confidence that I would easily be able to do it. Although it took some time, one evening, something clicked, and I ended up on top of the rig—that's definitely a feeling I won’t easily forget. Now, I feel that I need to spend more time on my Olympic lifts. Especially snatches, which are still a struggle. Therefore, I’ve set my goal to work towards a 135 lbs snatch.
I have loved the past five months being part of the KSCF family. The box is truly my happy space, and every day, I look forward to leaving work to go there and do the WOD. Regardless of how much someone lifts, PRs are always celebrated, you’re cheered on even if you’re time-capped, and everyone is ready to help if you have any questions. It’s this great community that keeps me going and what I will miss the most from my time here. But before it’s time to go, I will enjoy my last month here to the max feeling flattered to be the MOM this month.
