August Member of the Month

We start a new week today and embrace our last month of Summer. Today, we are thrilled to announce Juan Garau as our Member of the Month for August!

Juan's unwavering consistency in attending classes, pushing himself to new limits, and reaching remarkable achievements like his first Ring Muscle Up has truly set him apart. His dedication extends beyond his personal progress; Juan is always ready to assist our coaches by demoing movements during class. He has become a catalyst for our mission, warmly welcoming new members and inspiring them to embrace a fitter lifestyle.

You can see Juan during the evening classes to give him a high-five or if you dare to take the #SoulCrushingSaturday WODs you may see him there too. Learn a bit more about Juan below.

I was never particularly good at sports when I was growing up. During my time in my hometown in Mallorca, I mostly played soccer and then switched to swimming when soccer became too competitive and I began feeling the pressure of having to pass the bar to make it to the team. I discovered CrossFit while I was in Barcelona doing my undergrad. For the first couple of years in the city, I had mostly taken up several gym memberships but ended up slacking because of a lack of motivation. A CrossFit gym had just opened right next to my place, and I decided to give it a try. I immediately fell in love with it. I especially liked (and continue to like) not having to program my workouts and being able to find motivation by competing against my own benchmarks. A funny story is that my very first CrossFit workout was Karen (150 wall balls). I vividly remember not being able to move for a couple of days afterward. My friends even had to help me climb the stairs at my university! It's been almost eight years since then.

I like many WODs that I've done over the years, but I particularly like CrossFit Open 17.1/21.2 (a combination of DB snatches and burpee box jump overs). I repeat it often. In contrast, I have a single enemy in CrossFit: thrusters. I find them more mentally challenging rather than physically challenging. After a WOD, my go-to recovery is a simple protein shake. If I'm in Spain, I'll just have some "jamón ibérico"; it works like magic.

I have a basic set of hobbies outside of CrossFit. I love traveling and visiting new places (the last country I visited was Tunisia) and reading non-fiction books on very diverse topics. I also try to keep up with a couple of languages on Duolingo, but nothing very effective so far. I'm obsessed with self-improvement and, therefore, all my goals are connected with improving myself in different areas of my life. Of course, I strive to be better at CrossFit week after week (my next goal is to move from the top 25% to the top 20% in the Open), but I also focus on learning about new topics or picking up new skills (now I'm trying to improve at taking photos).
